How Children Learn the Sounds of Their Language
Long before children produce their first recognisable words, they are already engaged in sophisticated phonological learning. Infants as young as six months can discriminate phoneme contrasts from any language in the world—including clicks, retroflex consonants, and tonal distinctions they have never heard. By twelve months, this broad perceptual sensitivity has narrowed to the contrasts of the language they are being raised in. This process—called perceptual narrowing or attunement—is one of the most striking findings in developmental psycholinguistics.
From Babbling to Phonology
The canonical babbling stage, which typically begins around six to eight months, already reflects phonological structure. Infants produce reduplicated syllables (ba-ba, ma-ma, da-da) that are not random noise but constrained by the same articulatory and perceptual preferences that shape adult language. The consonants that appear earliest in babbling—bilabials /p b m/, alveolars /t d n/—are the same consonants that are most universally attested across languages in the IPA Chart. Learning Tones and Contrasts
Children acquiring tonal languages like Mandarin show sensitivity to lexical tone contrasts early in the first year—earlier than children acquiring non-tonal languages show sensitivity to stress. This suggests that the phonological categories of the input language are imprinted quickly, shaped by statistical regularities in the ambient speech. By 18 to 24 months, most children acquiring Mandarin have the four-tone system largely in place. Children acquiring languages with large consonant inventories—like those with clicks or ejectives—show comparable early mastery of those contrasts.
What happens when a child is raised bilingually? Research shows that bilingual children maintain separate phonological systems for each language from very early on, though there is some cross-linguistic influence.
