About IpaLookup.com

IpaLookup.com is a free reference for the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Look up any IPA symbol to see its articulation, audio sample, and which languages use it. Explore phoneme inventories for 500+ languages and compare sounds side by side.

Phoneme data is sourced from PHOIBLE v4.0.1 (published 2019, CC BY 4.0), a cross-linguistic database of phonological inventories compiled from published grammars and linguistic fieldwork. Language family and geographic data comes from Glottolog. Audio samples are from Wikimedia Commons.

PHOIBLE documents one or more phonological inventories per language, drawn from separate fieldwork sources. Where multiple inventories exist, we use one representative record per language. Phoneme counts may vary slightly from other sources due to differences in transcription conventions and dialect selection.

This site is operated by Long Pattern LLC. We build reference tools on top of publicly available open datasets. IpaLookup.com is not affiliated with the International Phonetic Association.
